Bertrand Chamayou performs two of Ravel's piano concertos in a programme that also features a maritime-inspired work by Gabriella Smith and Bartók’s celebrated Concerto for Orchestra. Smith’s 'Tumblebird Contrails', a French premiere, evokes the sounds of the Pacific coast and the myth of the road. Ravel’s concertos offer a study in contrasts: the darker, jazz-inflected Left Hand Concerto and the more classical, Mozartian G major Concerto. The evening concludes with Bartók’s modern symphonic masterpiece which highlights the virtuosity of every orchestral section.
