A raw orchestral night.
Vasily Petrenko raises his baton to lead the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that bursts with emotions and ideas on a truly heroic scale. The evening features Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra, a work that aims to tell the story of humanity through music, from its heaven-splitting opening to its enigmatic close. The performance also includes Beethoven’s Fifth and final piano concerto, the stirring and majestic 'Emperor' Concerto, performed by distinguished pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja. The concert opens with Wagner’s barnstorming Overture to Tannhäuser, depicting the battle between the human spirit and the pleasures of the senses.
