An underground, slow-burn nu jazz night.
Join Toki-O Nights, powered by Technics, and Kay Suzuki for an intimate evening of music, storytelling and Japanese Highball culture at Room 86. From psychedelic folk and soul to reggae, jazz and electronic music, Japanese artists have long taken inspiration from sounds around the world and reshaped them in unexpected ways. Through records and stories spanning several decades, Kay Suzuki explores how these influences were absorbed, reinterpreted and transformed into music that could only have come from Japan. Across the evening, Kay will guide you through two specially curated listening sessions, sharing the stories and influences behind his selections. Between sessions, you will explore the significance of the Highball within Japanese drinking culture and the principles behind the perfect serve, before building your own Toki Japanese Highball. Expect a relaxed evening centred around great records, shared stories and Japanese drinking culture - a chance to slow down, listen differently and discover how global sounds have been reimagined through a distinctly Japanese lens. With hi-fi sound from Technics and Toki Highballs at the heart of the experience, the event channels the slower, more intentional atmosphere of Japanese listening bar culture. Tickets are limited to 50 guests. Join us from 7-9pm for the full listening experience, followed by a relaxed closing DJ set from Kay Suzuki from 9-10pm, where walk-ins are welcome!
