An underground expressionism night.
Susanna Mälkki joins the soloists of the Ensemble intercontemporain for a programme that celebrates the narrative power of music across the Ensemble's repertoire, even in the absence of a libretto. The concert features Harrison Birtwistle's Secret Theatre, an instrumental virtual opera where soloists act as protagonists, inspired by Robert Graves. The programme also includes Schoenberg's Lied der Waldtaube from Gurrelieder, narrating the tragic fate of Tove; Milica Djordjević's transfixed, which explores the feeling of petrifying fear; and Christophe Bertrand's Scales, a work characterized by unstoppable rage and delirium.
