Former Principal Guest Conductor Susanna Mälkki returns to the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a program centered on the music of Béla Bartók. The performance features Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a piece that shifts between eerie elegies and life-affirming enthusiasm. The program also includes Miroslav Srnka’s exploration of the symphony as a biological superorganism and Martinů’s Oboe Concerto, performed by the Philharmonic’s new Principal Oboe Ryan Roberts. The latter work combines lyrical beauty with jazz-inflected rhythms and a Czech polka.
