One hundred years since a wailing siren, whip and wind machine announced the arrival of Edgard Varèse’s Amériques, the BBC Proms celebrates this urban hymn to New York City. Conductor Alain Altinoglu explores the dialogue between Europe and America, pairing music from the Old World and the New. The programme includes the sensual Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune by Debussy, the architectural Symphonies of Wind Instruments by Stravinsky, and Dvořák’s nostalgic Cello Concerto, composed during his time in the USA.
