Elgar’s Cello Concerto
Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández makes his Proms debut with Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a work noted for its deep emotional resonance. Joining the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Petrenko, the programme explores the complex musical landscapes of the 20th century. The evening begins with Webern’s Romantic-style Passacaglia, followed by Walton’s intense Second Symphony. Premiered in 1960, Walton's symphony is characterized by its Expressionistic power, providing a contrast to the avant-garde movements of its time.
