Carpenter's film is a masterwork in all the traditional aspects; the hallways that seem to take on a solar system in and of themselves and yet still ensnare; the synth-score hard-wired to your pulse; the evidence of the physical world always against us, of being utterly alone; the group dynamics beginning as a community before slowly losing their unification, breaking off into scattered remnants; the smooth, seemingly controlled-by-a-wave steadicam, stumbling forward like a zombie on rollerskates etc. But the reasoning behind its grand achievement is that it combines Carpenter's greatest strengths with a genuine inquisitive sorrow. He's looking to scare because he's scared too. Aren't we all?
NEVER GO TO GRAD SCHOOL!!!!A group of grad students team up with the Catholic Church to investigate a jar of Nikelodeon's Gak which is housed in an ancient church in downtown Los Angeles that looks like a set from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." The Gak contains the "Anti-God" and ends up jizzing all over them.Carpenter's scariest movie imo. One of his goofiest in a lot of ways, but scariest score, and definitely the most gruesome and terrifying images he's ever put to film. I especially like when that one guy gets consumed by beetles and then their writhing chitinous mass reconstitute his body and wears his skin so he can deliver a message to his fellow co-eds: "I've got a message for you and you're not going to like it: PRAY FOR DEATH."
