it was so wonderful to finally see my first feature length film on the big screen at VQFF in a very receptive audience. getting the chance to write the score for such a deeply resonant project was an honor, and i was so pleased to contribute my synth and game music experience to the score and in-world game soundtrack. equally honored to work with the choral ensemble vajra voices & their beautiful performances of hildegard's compositions. the film has a very specific feeling cadence to it, where it builds from a quiet space and verges on being a bit slow in developing, until the escalation of events cascade into quite a (loving) gut punch in its climactic moments before the denouement. really pleased to feel the audience's reaction to both its fun sense of humour & knowing sense of turmoil. thanks so much for having us ^^

MY WIFE DID THE SCORE FOR THIS MOVIE!!!! IT'S A PERFECT SCORE JUST LIKE MY PERFECT WIFE!!!!!There's a handful of moments in the start of the film where Cass engages with the world around them in a reserved and defensive way and it's in those moments that I think any misgivings I had about the movie being a little slow completely washed over me. Outerlands has a really incisive view of how being queer can feel in a world that itself is becoming more hostile and unwelcoming regardless of self. There's very little time given to stuff like Cass' apartment installing security cameras or Waymos """driving""" in the street but they're there, present, like the microaggressions and incompatible wavelengths that permeate the queer experience.The movie slowly ramps to this breaking point that hit me like a bag of hammers and I don't really want to say much because the resolution of it all is really cathartic. It's not the cleanest of endings but this stuff isn't and, more importantly, they're a lot less an ending than they are a beginning.Also did I mention the score which was perfect because my wife composed it.

Liked this quite a bit. Cass works as a restaurant server, living paycheck to paycheck. But they get thrown for a loop after a hookup with the new server, Kalli, and they’re left watching Kalli’s daughter, Ari, for days and days without any word from Kalli. Therelationship Cass builds with Ari, opens some wounds from their own childhood. Asia Kate Dillon as Cass was very good. And a very solid child performance from Ridley Asha Bateman as Ari. The two of them convey a lot without talking, especially at first, when their both reluctantly dropped into this caregiver situation. Degrees of Kevin Bacon: 21.
