Clark Griswald heeft zich voorgenomen om zijn gezin een heerlijke kerstvakantie te bezorgen. Maar helaas verloopt die zeer rampzalig. Hij koopt vijfentwintigduizend knipperlichtjes om het huis te versieren en gaat samen met zijn vrouw Ellen, zoon Russ en dochter Audrey, een hele zaterdag in het bos op zoek naar die ene, speciale kerstboom. De familie gaat aan het vele gooi- en smijtwerk bijna ten onder, maar redt het met vallen en opstaan tot het 'vrede op aarde' is en alle breuken hersteld zijn.
