Music can speak even when words are silenced. In the last days of Stalin’s Russia, composers knew better than to voice their fears out loud. Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is a gripping musical testament to oppression, hiding in plain sight. Under the baton of Paavo Järvi, the London Philharmonic Orchestra performs this formidable work alongside Beethoven’s mighty Piano Concerto No. 5, featuring pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. The program opens with Overture No. 2 by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, a powerful piece written during the Cold War.
