A masterpiece of religious repertoire, the St John Passion is a monument of emotions. Set to music in the early days of Christianity, the genre evolved through the 14th century and gained prestige with the Lutheran Reformation, emphasizing German text for accessibility. This was the first large-scale work Bach wrote for Leipzig, striking for both its beautiful solo arias and its grand choral sections.
