A slow-burn classical night.
A new Requiem Mass by David Önaç commemorating the lives of Africans trafficked into slavery. The composition draws on research by Johns Hopkins University into the historic role of Lloyd’s of London in the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans, incorporating liturgical rituals, biblical passages, and archival documents. The musical language reflects the composer's heritage, blending European contemporary classical styles with African American traditions of jazz, spirituals, and gospel. This world premiere performance is presented in partnership with Culture&.
