A nostalgic, underground classical night.
Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße 1, 10785 Berlin, Germany
Gustav Mahler explores one of humanity's great questions in his Second Symphony: "Why did you live?" His music traverses the light and shadows of existence, filled with turmoil, grief, intimacy, and down-to-earth joy of life. The composer expanded the boundaries of the symphony by integrating folk songs from the cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn and, following Beethoven's Ninth, a grand choral finale. According to Mahler, in this work one would be "struck to the ground with clubs and then lifted to the highest heights on angel wings." Daniel Harding conducts.
