Mingus Big Band (7:00pm Show)
A nostalgic, raw big band night.
The Mingus Big Band exclusively performs the works of renowned American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Established by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble features contemporary arrangements of Mingus' compositions in the larger format he envisioned. The group's dynamic approach promotes creative exploration and evolving interpretations of his music, serving as a platform for individual artistic expression in the spirit of Mingus' Jazz Workshop. Comprised of a rotating cast of New York City's top established and emerging musicians, the ensemble is recognized for its spontaneity and creativity. The band has received seven GRAMMY nominations and won in 2011 for Live at Jazz Standard. Their performance at The Pocket continues the tradition of the Mingus Mondays residency.
