Pianist and composer David Virelles brings together his Afro-Caribbean heritage and New York improvisational jazz. Growing up in a musical family in Santiago de Cuba, Virelles' work is a syncretic blend of Cuban folkloric traditions and contemporary jazz, creating a personal music language. This performance features his trio with longtime collaborators Vicente Archer on bass and Eric McPherson on drums. Throughout his career, Virelles has collaborated with legendary artists like Henry Threadgill, Ravi Coltrane, and Steve Coleman, and has received significant acclaim for his albums on the ECM label. His recent multidisciplinary work 'ORO' was commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Virelles is currently a professor at the Zürich University of the Arts and has been recognized as a Guggenheim Fellow and Steinway artist.
