Around Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Pygmalion brings together two anniversaries: the signing of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and the two hundredth anniversary of Beethoven's passing. Conductor Raphaël Pichon presents a transverse program where the EU anthem, with its message of universal love, dialogues with spiritual 20th-century works like Schoenberg's call for peace and Charles Ives' exploration of existence. Funereal colors from Honegger and Stravinsky reflect the original post-war resolve to avoid future conflict.
