A powerful evening of Russian orchestral works featuring Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, known as ‘The Year 1905’. This symphonic homage to the First Russian Revolution captures the violence of Bloody Sunday and the subsequent national grief. Kirill Gerstein joins the orchestra for Rachmaninov’s virtuosic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, while the program opens with Oliver Knussen’s gilded fanfare Flourish with Fireworks, a tribute to Stravinsky.
