A nostalgic, underground baroque night.
William Christie and Paul Agnew reunite for an exceptional collaboration as joint directors, bringing their expertise as leading interpreters of Monteverdi's work. This programme by Les Arts Florissants explores the evolution of the madrigal, culminating in the dramatic masterpiece Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Inspired by Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, the work depicts the tragic duel between the knight Tancred and Clorinda. Through innovative musical expression and theatrical power, Monteverdi created a new form of storytelling that paved the way for modern opera and transformed Western musical composition.
