A nostalgic baroque night.
Paul Agnew and Les Arts Florissants celebrate the creative freedom of the English composer Henry Purcell. The performance explores the two complementary vocal forms in which Purcell excelled: songs and catches. The songs act as intimate and dramatic monologues, full of melancholy and passion, while the catches offer humor and vocal complexity through three-part canons. This program highlights the spirit of the English Restoration, moving between heartbreak and the joy of a sound banquet.
