A nostalgic, underground opera night.
Mahler expert Daniele Gatti, who has frequently performed this repertoire with the Orchestre National de France, conducts the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 10. Gatti has served as the ensemble's principal conductor since the 2024-2025 season. Left unfinished at the time of Mahler's death in 1911, the Tenth Symphony survived as a mixture of fully orchestrated pages and various sketches. While friends like Arnold Schönberg and Bruno Walter declined to complete the work, his widow Alma Mahler chose to preserve it. This performance features the celebrated completion by British musicologist Deryck Cooke. The concert marks the conclusion of Gatti's complete Mahler cycle, a project he initiated upon taking leadership of the Dresden orchestra.
