Benjamin Herman staat bekend als de meest productieve jazzsaxofonist van Nederland. Al meer dan dertig jaar bereikt hij met New Cool Collective nieuwe luisteraars, terwijl hij altijd nieuwsgierig blijft naar wat er nú gebeurt in de jazz. The Tokyo Sessions is zijn nieuwste project. Samen met zijn vaste trio werkte hij aan dit spannende album, dat werd opgenomen in het iconische Studio Dede in Tokio, Japan, en begin 2026 uitkomt. Herman’s fascinatie voor Japan en de hyper-eclectische undergroundscene van Tokio begon tijdens zijn eerste tour daar in 1989. Met bassist Thomas Pol en drummer/producer Jimmi Jo Hueting verkent hij op deze release de grenzen van deze sound. Met analoge synths, effecten, samples en subtiele overdubs is The Tokyo Sessions een ode aan de veelzijdige Japanse muziekcultuur, van underground jazz tot anime-soundtracks en traditionele salonmuziek. Live wordt het trio aangevuld door de Japanse toetsenist en producer BIGYUKI, bekend om zijn futuristische mix van jazz, hiphop, soul en elektronica, waarin zijn Japanse roots samenkomen met de bruisende New Yorkse scene.
