A biopic of Princess Deokhye – following the 1910 annexation of Korea by Japan, the final princess of the Joseon dynasty is forced to spend much of her life in the land of the rising sun. The title and nature of the life examined invites comparisons to Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 masterpiece, The Last Emperor – which can only make this look pedestrian. A decision to combine multiple people from Deokhye’s life into a single love interest / white knight plays to director Jin-ho Hur’s romantic drama strengths, but undermines authenticity. By the standards of historical dramas dealing with this time period, its less jingoistic propaganda, and should be commended for a thoughtful approach. Ultimately The Last Princess provides actress Son Ye-jin with a challenging role, which she makes the most of, while the film is respectful of the life presented. I am not rating this, figuring that it means more to those who feel connected to this history – but personally, Son Ye-jin performance aside, I preferred the time I spent reading about Princess Deokhye.South Korea Marathon
