Nachdem es bereits durch zahlreiche Pflegefamilien gereicht wurde, bekommt das rebellische und trotzige Problemkind Ricky auf dem Land die Möglichkeit zu einem Neuanfang. Doch als es eines Tages zu einer Tragödie in der neuen Familie kommt, die für Ricky einmal mehr einen Umzug und eine neue Pflegefamilie bedeuten würde, flieht er gemeinsam mit Hec vor den Behörden in die neuseeländische Wildnis.
