Charles Tatum hatte einst eine große Karriere vor sich, doch er ist bei allen großen Zeitungen inzwischen gefeuert worden und arbeitet nun als kleiner Reporter bei einer Lokalzeitung. Als er eines Tages erfährt, daß in einem nahegelegenen Bergwerk ein Mann verschüttet wurde, macht er sich sofort auf den Weg dorthin und berichtet exclusiv von dem Unfall, wobei er alle Möglichkeiten ausnutzt, um aus dem tragischen Unfall eine große Story zu machen, die ihm die letzte Chance eröffnen soll, doch noch ein großer Vertreter seines Gewerbes zu werden.
