Klaus Mäkelä conducts the Orchestre de Paris in a program featuring his Finnish compatriots Esa-Pekka Salonen and Sibelius, alongside Beethoven’s "Emperor" Piano Concerto performed by Sir Stephen Hough. Mäkelä, who has been shaped by the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, leads Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen Suite, a collection of four symphonic pieces inspired by the Kalevala epic. The program opens with Salonen’s Helix, a short 2005 work built on the metaphor of a spiral with an intoxicatingly accelerating tempo.
