Joseph Trem and his piano have become synonymous at this point. “Whenever I feel something, I sit down at the piano and write it,” he told A&R Factory in 2023, and it’s clear he’s dead serious. Take the raw, contemplative “Ruminations”: Trem’s voice sings over a soft, emotive piano line, bringing the listener directly into his world. His dark, straightforward lyrics and concise instrumentation ensure that nothing comes in between him and the listener; if it sounds like he’s singing and playing directly to you, it’s because he is. Trem began writing and producing music at the age of ten, with little more than a Casio keyboard, a laptop, and a dream. To this day, the room in which he writes his songs also doubles as a cat room, complete with a cat tree, scratching post, and litter box.
