studio ghibli is great because on the one hand you get harrowing films where you watch young children die of starvation and then you also get films where racoons perform magic with their nutsacks
This movie is nuts.
The film follows a community of anthropomorphic tanuki (raccoon dogs) in Japan who utilize their mythological shape-shifting abilities to fight back against the urban sprawl destroying their forest habitat.
It was directed by Isao Takahata, a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, in 1994, whose other major works include Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
While animated, it features mature thematic elements concerning environmental loss and cultural displacement, along with satirical portrayals of folkloric anatomy, making it more suited for older children and adults.
