The album was written and produced over the past two years by Welch in collaboration with a small group of musicians, including Mark Bowen (IDLES), Aaron Dessner, and Mitski. After a life-saving surgery during the Dance Fever tour, Welch found inspiration in spirituality, mysticism, and folk horror. These themes return on the new album, which explores subjects such as womanhood, relationships, aging, and mortality.
