Mulatu Astatke

We kick off the concert of Mulatu Astatke with none other than Siegfried Hart, drummer, composer, and familiar face at BIRD. Last season, he was our artist in residency during BIRDsessions, and since then, he has delved even deeper into his own sound. Siegfried grew up in Aruba, where instruments were not always readily available. But that didn't stop him, he built his own percussion and immersed himself in the Afro-Antillean rhythms of his roots. Now, years later, he mixes those influences with jazz, hip hop, and a generous dose of soul. His music feels like a journey through identity, memory, and emotion, always with groove, always with a story. He recently released the single Cunucu di Seit and is hard at work on his debut album, which will be released soon. Expect hypnotic drums and a sound and energy that seamlessly align with the music of Mulatu Astatke. In short: come early!
