A nostalgic, raw big band night.
The Mingus Big Band exclusively performs the music of the iconic American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Established by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble features large-band arrangements of Mingus's compositions, fulfilling a format he envisioned but was not always able to maintain. The group's dynamic structure fosters deep exploration and evolving interpretations of his repertoire, serving as a platform for individual artistic expression in the spirit of Mingus's Jazz Workshop. Comprised of a rotating cast of New York City's premier established and emerging musicians, the Mingus Big Band is celebrated for its spontaneity and creativity. The ensemble has received seven Grammy nominations, including a win in 2011, and continues its legacy with the legendary Mingus Mondays residency.
