A nostalgic, underground early music night.
il Pomo d’Oro Choir performs two solemn works written for the Basilica of St Mark’s in Venice. The programme begins with Giovanni Gabrieli’s setting of the 51st Psalm, Miserere mei Deus, featuring a dense polyphonic web for six voices. This is followed by Francesco Cavalli’s sonorous Missa pro Defunctis, a great Requiem Mass for two choirs of four voices written in the early 1670s, intended for the composer's own funeral.
