Hypnotic Brass Ensemble consists of seven brothers, all sons of Phil Cohran, trumpeter of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Raised on a diet of unbridled jazz, they have spent 20 years refining their musical heritage into their own signature sound. Supported for the first time by guitar and bass, their music combines jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and New Orleans brass band traditions, occasionally touching on house or soca. The resulting fusion is a high-energy, grooving experience that is both jubilant and danceable, reflecting the shared lineage of Afro-American music styles. With 12 albums and collaborations with Gorillaz and Mos Def, they represent one of the most exciting hip-hop brass bands today.
