Double bill by master saxophonist: ode to Sonny Rollins and duet with pianist. Saxophonist and composer Ben van Gelder has, from an early age, developed into one of today’s authorities on the alto saxophone. Internationally he impresses with his distinctive sound, lyrical playing and idiosyncratic compositions. On this evening Van Gelder presents two projects: a duet with pianist Xavi Torres and a trio tribute to Sonny Rollins. The very first encounter between Van Gelder and Torres was on our stage, during the first edition of Spring Duets in 2021. Since then, the two have performed and recorded together several times. In addition to the duo set, the saxophonist also pays homage to the legendary Sonny Rollins. His admiration was sparked after reading Rollins’ recently published biography. For this tribute Van Gelder is joined by Ton Felices on double bass and Wouter Kühne on drums. A trio without piano – Rollins’ favorite format – allowing for freedom, contrast and tension without harmonic restrictions.
