Amsterdam is a magnet for musical talents from all over the world. Two up-and-coming band leaders with backgrounds in jazz and improvisation will now perform on our stage in a double concert: saxophonist Alice Leggett, originally from Wales, will present her sextet, preceded by a solo set of Latvian-born pianist/vocalist Līva Dumpe. In her solo performance, Līva Dumpe draws inspiration from her early classical piano studies and love for late Romanticism and Impressionism. The piano forms a solid ground, while her voice becomes the ever-changing air element, shifting between wordless improvisations and melancholic melodies. Recurring themes include Latvian folk traditions and superstitions, nature and its elements, humour and irony, and the expansion of voice possibilities. In her compositions, Alice Leggett blends intriguing forms and emotive themes. She is recognised for her expressive alto saxophone tone, melodic statements, and personal voice. The Alice Leggett Sextet features a lineup of international musicians with whom Alice has developed deep relationships both on and off the stage over the years. They will perform a mix of brand new compositions and material from Birdsong, Alice’s debut album on ZenneZ Records. ‘Leggett’s art does not make concessions: this is serious music, and deserves and rewards serious listening’ (Jazzwise).
