Η εορτή της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου είναι από τις σημαντικότερες της ορθοδοξίας και γιορτάζεται με κάθε μεγαλοπρέπεια στο νησί της Τήνου. Οι εορτασμοί ξεκινούν την παραμονή με πανηγυρικό εσπερινό στον Πανίερο Ναό της Ευαγγελιστρίας Τήνου ενώ το επόμενο πρωί, μετά τον όρθρο και την πανηγυρική Θεία Λειτουργία, γίνεται λιτανεία της θαυματουργού Εικόνας στους δρόμους της πόλης, συνοδεία αγήματος του Πολεμικού Ναυτικού και πλήθους πιστών. Τη λιτανεία συνοδεύει με μουσική η μπάντα του Πολεμικού Ναυτικού. Την παραμονή της εορτής γίνεται κατάθεση στεφάνου από τον Αρχηγό του Πολεμικού Ναυτικού στο Μαυσωλείο του Πολεμικού Πλοίου «Έλλη» και την επόμενη ρίψη στεφάνου στη θάλασσα, στο σημείο όπου τορπιλίστηκε το θρυλικό καταδρομικό.
