What’s the difference between a volcanic eruption and a drunken brawl in a run-down bar on a Saturday night? From a distance—a great distance—man and his environment blur into one chaotic mess. Any perspective beyond our own immediately dismantles the pompous idea that we stand ‘above nature.’ Does the fall of a leaf, an ant’s march, a mother seal feeding her pup, or the eradication of entire crop fields by grasshoppers infestations hold any less significance than our characteristic reshaping of the world? What unseen instincts set birth and destruction into motion? Are we merely the conscious embodiment of a black hole’s destructive force, incarnated on this wretched, floating rock? And still, on particularly busy days, or when dreaming of exotic places, I imagine myself a cat or a bird. Have any of these animals, or anything else for that matter, ever wished to be human?
