A nostalgic impressionism night.
Daniele Gatti and the musical forces of the "National" perform works by Strauss and Beethoven. Richard Strauss completed his Metamorphosen in April 1945 at the age of 80, as Germany faced defeat; it is a poignant lamentation written solely for string instruments. This work conclude with a citation from the funeral march of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica", linking the two pieces through a shared, indefinable atmosphere of both a life's end and a cultural monument.
