The acclaimed 14-piece Mingus Big Band returns to celebrate the enduring musical legacy of composer, bassist, and visionary Charles Mingus. Created in 1991 by Sue Mingus, the ensemble grew out of the posthumous Mingus Dynasty and Epitaph projects, bringing to life the larger-scale arrangements and expansive ensemble sound that Mingus himself long envisioned. For more than three decades, the band’s weekly New York residency and ever-evolving line-up of leading established players and rising stars have kept Mingus’ music alive. Blending raw soulfulness with the freedom of avant-garde jazz and the sophistication of classical composition, Mingus’ music remains as powerful and uncompromising as ever. Expect explosive ensemble playing and daring improvisation in this fitting tribute to one of the most important voices in modern music.
