LA Phil Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a program contemplating the natural world, featuring Sibelius’ swan-inspired Fifth Symphony and the US premiere of Gabriella Smith’s How to Be A Bird. The evening opens with Einojuhani Rautavaara’s 1972 neo-Romantic concerto, which incorporates a recorded track of Arctic birdsong to transport listeners to the hypnotic shores and bogs of Finland.
