A nostalgic big band night.
The Mingus Big Band performs the repertoire of the renowned American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Established by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble showcases large-band arrangements of Mingus's compositions, fulfilling a vision he held but was often unable to realize. The group’s structure promotes exploration and evolving interpretations of his work, serving as a platform for artistic expression similar to his Jazz Workshop. Featuring a rotating cast of New York City’s finest musicians, the band is known for its creativity and spontaneity, earning seven GRAMMY nominations and a win in 2011. This performance is part of their long-standing residency at The Pocket.
