LA Phil Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a program contemplating the natural world, featuring Sibelius’ soaring Fifth Symphony and the US premiere of Gabriella Smith’s How to Be A Bird. The performance explores nature’s ritual communications and the joy of the natural world through music. The program begins with the ethereal sound of solo flutes in Einojuhani Rautavaara’s 1972 neo-Romantic concerto, where the orchestra interacts with recorded birdsong, transporting listeners to the hypnotic shores of Finland.
