Goethe baseerde zijn gedichtenbundel _West-östlicher Divan_ op gedichten van de 14e-eeuwse Perzische dichter Hafez waarin de liefde tussen dichter Hatem en zijn beminde Suleika symbool staan voor een stimulerende uitwisseling tussen Oost en West. Ook in _Blue as the Turquoise Night_ schetst de Iraanse componist Kayhan Kalhor een meditatieve, nachtelijke wereld die heen en weer schakelt tussen een westerse en een meer traditionele Perzische stijl. De legende van Şahmeran, een mythische slangenkoningin uit de Anatolische folklore die wordt gedood na te zijn verraden, weerspiegelt thema’s als wijsheid, schoonheid en opoffering. Hierdoor geïnspireerd schreef de Turkse componist Fazıl Say een celloconcert. Verraad leidt ook in het tragische liefdesverhaal van _Tristan en Isolde_ tot de ondergang, maar de liefde wordt hier wel gezien als eeuwig. Mahlers _Adagietto_ is een diepgevoelde ode aan zijn vrouw Alma die toont hoe liefde verschillen overstijgt.
