A nostalgic, underground chamber music night.
Steven Isserlis’s programme recalls the musical powerhouse of Leipzig in the mid-1800s. The performance explores the musical connections between Felix Mendelssohn, William Sterndale Bennett, and Robert Schumann. Mendelssohn, impressed by Bennett’s works, invited the English composer to Leipzig where he befriended Schumann. The concert features Bennett’s melodic Sonata Duo, written for virtuoso Antonio Piatti, alongside Mendelssohn’s Bach-inspired Second Cello Sonata and Isserlis's own arrangements of pieces by Schumann.
