Né à Conakry en Guinée, Séfoudi Kouyaté est le fils du maître de la kora M’Bady Kouyaté et de la chanteuse Diaryatou Kouyaté. En tant que djéli (griot), il perpétue l'héritage des conteurs musiciens de l'ancien Empire Mandingue. Formé dès l'enfance par son père aux techniques traditionnelles de la kora, il interprète les thèmes illustres de l'épopée mandingue tout en ayant développé une maîtrise du balafon et du djembé.
