The internationally acclaimed musical duo Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma will appear for the first time on the stage of Theatre of the No on Thursday, January 8 at 21:00, presenting a unique concert that incorporates elements of a new musical genre, which Ross Daly calls “Contemporary Modal Music.” At the heart of their sound is a lyre based on the Cretan lyra, but with significant innovations, most notably the addition of 22 sympathetic strings. This lyre was designed in 1991 by Ross Daly in collaboration with the master luthier Nikolaos Bra. A special place in the duo’s sonic landscape is also held by the Nak Tarhu, a modern stringed instrument created through Ross Daly’s collaboration with Australian luthier Peter Biffin. Its deep and ethereal sound, reminiscent of the lyre, is a defining feature of their music. The term “Contemporary Modal Music”, introduced by Ross Daly, describes compositions based on modal traditions that combine ancient musical practices with contemporary creative approaches, transcending the established boundaries of “contemporary music.” Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma, deeply immersed in their belief in the transpersonal and transcendent character of the archetypal modal traditions of the East, have studied many of these traditions in depth under some of the world’s greatest masters. The knowledge they have gained is incorporated into their own compositions, which reflect their personal perception of the sacred nature of musical art. Ross Daly, of Irish descent and a permanent resident of Crete since 1975, is the founder of the Labyrinth Musical Workshop. He collaborates with leading musicians worldwide and has a collection of over 250 traditional instruments. With more than 35 albums, he is renowned for his original compositions and arrangements of traditional melodies collected during his travels. Kely Thoma, began studying the lyra in 1995 under Ross Daly and has been touring internationally with the Labyrinth ensemble since 1998. Since 2008, she has collaborated with the Norwegian string quartet Tokso and has released three solo albums (Anamkhara, 7Fish, Ama Kopasoun oi Kairoi), which have received excellent reviews. Στο επίκεντρο του ήχου τους βρίσκεται μια λύρα βασισμένη στο κρητικό πρότυπο, αλλά με σημαντικές καινοτομίες, κυριότερη την προσθήκη 22 συμπαθητικών χορδών. Η λύρα αυτή σχεδιάστηκε το 1991 από τον Ross Daly σε συνεργασία με τον κορυφαίο οργανοποιό Νικόλαο Μπρά. Ιδιαίτερη θέση στο ηχητικό τοπίο του ντουέτου έχει και το Nak Tarhu, ένα σύγχρονο έγχορδο όργανο που δημιουργήθηκε μέσα από τη συνεργασία του Ross Daly με τον Αυστραλό οργανοποιό Peter Biffin. Ο βαθύς και αιθέριος ήχος του, συγγενικός με εκείνον της λύρας, αποτελεί χαρακτηριστικό στοιχείο της μουσικής τους. Ο όρος «Σύγχρονη Τροπική Μουσική», που εισήγαγε ο Ross Daly, περιγράφει συνθέσεις βασισμένες σε τροπικές (modal) παραδόσεις οι οποίες συνδυάζουν αρχέγονες μουσικές πρακτικές με σύγχρονες δημιουργικές προσεγγίσεις, υπερβαίνοντας τα καθιερωμένα σύνορα της «σύγχρονης μουσικής». Ο Ross Daly και η Κέλυ Θωμά, βαθιά εμποτισμένοι από την πίστη τους στον υπερπροσωπικό και υπερβατικό χαρακτήρα των αρχέτυπων τροπικών παραδόσεων της Ανατολής, μελέτησαν σε βάθος πολλές από αυτές δίπλα σε ορισμένους από τους σπουδαιότερους δασκάλους του κόσμου. Η γνώση που αποκόμισαν ενσωματώνεται στις δικές τους συνθέσεις, οι οποίες αντανακλούν την προσωπική τους αντίληψη για την ιερή φύση της μουσικής τέχνης. Ο Ross Daly, Ιρλανδικής καταγωγής και μόνιμος κάτοικος Κρήτης από το 1975. Ιδρυτής του Μουσικού Εργαστηρίου Λαβύρινθος, συνεργάζεται με κορυφαίους μουσικούς παγκοσμίως και διαθέτει συλλογή άνω των 250 παραδοσιακών οργάνων. Με πάνω από 35 άλμπουμ, είναι γνωστός για τις πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις του και διασκευές παραδοσιακών μελωδιών που συνέλεξε κατά τα ταξίδια του. Η Κέλυ Θωμά, γεννημένη το 1978 στον Πειραιά, ξεκίνησε τη λύρα το 1995 με δάσκαλο τον Ross Daly και ταξιδεύει με το συγκρότημα «Λαβύρινθος» από το 1998 διεθνώς. Από το 2008 συνεργάζεται με το νορβηγικό κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων Tokso και έχει κυκλοφορήσει τρεις προσωπικούς δίσκους
