Jazz Thursdays w/ Amsterdam Jazz Trio & Boris van der Lek
Jazz lovers, unite. Join us every Thursday for a free live jazz session in our lobby. Grab a drink, take a seat, and unwind from a hard day’s work during Jazz Thursdays at Werkplaats. Each edition, we welcome fabulous jazz musicians. Whether it’s the renowned Amsterdam Jazz Trio (Jochem Braat on piano, Tijn Jans on drums, and Adrie Braat on double bass), intimate duos, or special guests ranging from saxophonists to jazz singers and vibraphonists – expect an evening filled with top-tier jazz. Because of their love for the timeless music of the American Songbook and the musical freedom offered by a piano trio, pianist Jochem Braat, drummer Tijn Jans, and bassist Adrie Braat have found each other in the Amsterdam Jazz Trio. Bringing together their diverse musical backgrounds, they create a unique and exciting sound, so seamlessly interwoven that the trio feels like a single instrument. The trio draws inspiration from the long tradition of classic jazz trios led by Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Nat King Cole and Bill Evans, as well as Dutch jazz greats like Pim Jacobs and Louis van Dijk. Just like these names, the Amsterdam Jazz Trio brings fresh interpretations to well-known jazz pieces, paying tribute to jazz history while showing that this music still has an important place in the world today. Their their latest release—recorded live at the Volkshotel, Amsterdam—features celebrated tenor saxophonist Boris van der Lek. Swinging tenor saxophonist Boris van der Lek is a welcome guest with the Amsterdam Jazz Trio. Over the years, he has played with jazz greats such as Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb, Joe Pass, Butch Miles, Hans Dulfer, and Jules Deelder, as well as in the bands of Herman Brood, Golden Earring, and Livin’ Blues. Nicknamed ‘The Breeze’, Boris is known for his characteristic Ben Webster-style sound. Together with the Amsterdam Jazz Trio, he performs beautiful ballads and standards from the American Songbook, as well as swinging, danceable jazz music with an infectious groove. For this occasion, the trio will be joined by the great guitarist Matthijs Driessen as an additional guest.
