In Exile
At this very moment, the refugee crisis in Europe is tearing apart entire communities. But migration is of all times and refugees are everywhere. In this programme, Collegium Vocale Gent and Het Collectief, led by James Wood, bring to light the cultural consequences of exile, voluntary or otherwise. Between the two World Wars, great composers sought refuge in the United States and gave new meaning to folk music, new music, and the ache of homesickness. With powerful works by Eisler, Zemlinsky, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Bartók, the Belgian top ensembles Collegium Vocale Gent and Het Collectief continue their first-rate collaboration. Just like before at the Muziekgebouw, they know how to bring not only pure musical pleasure, but also food for thought with a programme that has a contemporary touch and powerful music by top composers.
