Makis Ablianitis No More Melodies Live at Theatre of the NO Athens
Leading guitarist and composer Makis Ablianitis presents his new project No More Melodies on Saturday, March 21 at 21:30 at Theatre of the NO. A live experience where jazz meets funk and rock through free improvisation and creative interaction on stage. Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and organist Giorgos Kontrafouris also takes part in the evening, adding his own distinctive musical signature. Following the release of his sixth solo album, Earthbounds – The Music of Makis Ablianitis Remixed, Ablianitis reunites with his longtime collaborator, with whom he had first worked on his debut album Flame Keeper. This time, however, the musical approach and aesthetic direction are different clearly more contemporary and forward-looking. The program is based almost exclusively on new compositions by Ablianitis, featuring a dynamic sound that strongly shapes the ensemble’s improvisational character. Beyond the classic sound of jazz guitar, he incorporates electric guitar and effects, drawing from the golden era of funk as well as the rock scene. This sonic palette blends seamlessly with the virtuosity and deep musicality of Giorgos Kontrafouris on the Hammond organ, adding groove, intensity, and explosive energy. On drums, Foivos Anthis one of the most promising musicians of the younger generation, completes the trio with solid technique and a powerful rhythmic presence. Makis Ablianitis is a leading figure of the Greek jazz and ethnic-jazz scene with an established international profile. His landmark album BAHAR (2001) achieved triple-platinum status and featured artists such as Hariprasad Chaurasia, Glen Velez, Dragan Dautovski, Haig Yazdjian, Petros Tabouris, and Manolis Lidakis. He has also collaborated with Maria Farantouri on the album Mosaic as arranger and artistic producer. His discography includes Kismet, Uranos (featuring Pantelis Thalassinos and Vangelis Germanos), and Earthbounds – The Music of Makis Ablianitis Remixed. In January 2026, he released No More Melodies.
