Weidse en ruige natuur verklankt op de piano. John Luther Adams is een componist die de immensiteit van de natuur subliem in klank weet te vatten. Dat doet hij met imposante orkestwerken, maar ook in kleine bezetting. Vanmiddag spelen specialisten Ralph van Raat en Emanuele Arciuli het complete werk voor piano solo van John Luther Adams, inclusief de wereldpremiere van Four Thousand Holes in een versie voor twee piano’s. Weids, majestueus, overweldigend: de hand van de meester is onmiskenbaar. John Luther Adams (niet te verwarren met de postminimalist John Adams) woonde lang in Alaska. Hij vereeuwigde de noordelijke oceaan in zijn met de Pulitzer en een Grammy bekroonde orkestwerk Become Ocean. Nu woont hij parttime in een Mexicaanse woestijn, wat leidde tot Become Desert. Ook de titels van zijn pianowerken spreken voor zich: ruige, onherbergzame natuur vormt steeds de inspiratiebron.
